Welcome! Tanning should be a gradual process. No rush! Our experienced sales associates will outline a plan for you, encouraging a gradual increase in exposure times.
If you are taking any medication, we suggest that you consult your physician before tanning. Some medication can cause extra sensitivity to the UV light, causing overexposure.
Always wear protective eyewear!! Ultraviolet light will penetrate the eyelids.
Yes! Your skin can tan - your eyes cannot! Federal law requires all tanning salons to ensure customers wear proper eye protection. This eyewear must meet federal government standards by blocking 99% of UVA and UVB rays. Simply closing the eyelids or using sunglasses is not adequate protection as the UV rays will easily penetrate through these items.
Don't have the proper protection? No problem! We have several eyewear options (including reusable and disposable) available for purchase at the salon.
Great question! The answer does depend on your skin type, the frequency of your visits and the tanning bed(s) you utilize. That said, you should have a skin tone change after the first few tanning sessions.
If beginning in an entry-level tanning bed, you should develop a solid base tan in 8-10 tanning sessions. 1-3 sessions per week is recommended to maintain your color.
If starting in a high pressure tanning bed, 3 sessions should assist with building your base. In order to maintain your color, we recommend tanning once every 1-2 weeks.
Your tan occurs on the epidermal (outer) layers of your skin. Skin cells gradually die and are replaced with the next layer (un-tanned) every 26 to 30 days.
Probably not. Some skin types tan quickly and easily while others do not have the pigmentation necessary to develop much of a tan. If you have "type 1" skin, it's recommended that you not tan at all. Type 1 skin is skin that always burns easily and severely, tans very little and peels. This condition is most common with people that have fair skin, blue eyes and freckles. Approximately 5% of the population is unable to tan. We would recommend you try one of our UV-free tanning options.
Many people falsely assume that sunburns will eventually "fade" into tans. Sunburns are associated with permanent skin damage as a sunburn is an injury on top of your tanned skin. Hence the pain that comes with it. Never burn yourself intentionally. At Bronze Tanning we believe in Smart Tans!
Medium pressure units emit both UVA & UVB at a low energy level. Medium pressure units will give more of a red tone tan. A Medium pressure tan will need to be maintained more often.
High pressure units generate UVB & UVA, but emit only UVA during a tanning session by means of a sophisticated filtering system.
Bottom line: It will take fewer sessions with a high pressure unit to build a golden tan and to keep it.

Indoor tanning lotions protect and nourish your skin for a better and longer lasting tan. Not only will using them make you reach a radiant tan, but they will also improve your skin overall. Indoor tanning lotions contain loads of nutrients that are vital for the skin, as well as hydrating particles that keep your skin tight, wrinkle-free and prevent it from becoming dry and itchy.
Keep in mind that dry skin reflects UV light, so if you are not using an indoor tanning lotion, you can be wasting up to 50% of your tanning session! Ask one of our sales associates for tips on picking the perfect tanning lotion.
Outdoor tanning lotions are not recommended for indoor use, as they can cause a film on the acrylic and will inhibit the tanning process for you and other guests. For this reason, we prohibit the use of outdoor lotions at Bronze.
Most likely, itchiness is a symptom of photosensitivity to UV light or an allergic reaction to a chemical in your tanning lotion. We recommend showering and removing all existing chemicals off your skin as well as attempting to tan without lotion. Additionally, we suggest slightly decreasing your exposure time in the tanning bed.
Your skin actually becomes thicker as your tanning progresses, making it difficult for UV light to penetrate the upper layers. This is commonly referred to as a tanning "plateau".
Moisturizer is extremely important at this point. Your skin cells are standing up as much as 45° and are actually reflecting the UV rays. Using plenty of moisturizing lotion will help these cells lay down and become more translucent, more receptive to UV rays.
